Discussion:
OE Compacting in the backgroud....?

Somewhere along the way, I came across an option for OE to "compact messages
in the backgroud".

Now, for some reason I am getting repeated (and I mean repeatedly!) pop-up
messages that say:

"To free up disk space, Outlook Express can compact messages. This may take
a few minutes."

It also seems to take some system resources and slows down other things I am
doing.

I assume this is becuase I picked to "compact messages in the background"
that htis is now occurring.

I cant recall, nor can find this option anymore.

How do I stop getting these pop-up messages...?

THank you.

The background compaction option was removed starting with XP SP2. Even
with background compaction, there was no prompt.

Starting with SP2, you get the prompt to compact after 100 closings of
OE and every one thereafter until you compact.

My guess is that you recently installed XP SP3. It changes the way the
compact count gets incremented. If the main OE program is closed, every
time a DBX, EML or NWS file is accessed the count gets incremented.
This includes double clicking an EML file or sending an e-mail from
another program (if OE is the default for either) or a number of
indexing programs such as Windows Desktop Search or Nero Scout. In the
latter case, telling the indexing programs to stop indexing DBX, EML and
NWS files will stop the problem.

hello,

I have XP SP2 but unfortunately I chose to accept request to compress files.
As a result I can't see my prevoius e-mails. Probably all .dbx files have
been corrupted by this operation.
I have used a lot of programs that extract .dbx files, but no one of them
have been able to recover all my mails (but just very few) even if all the
.dbx files have the same size as before compression.

Does onyone know a poerful program that recover a corrupted .dbx file or can
I hope to recover my mails in other way, for example reinstalling OE?

Thanks

Please start your own new thread and explain your problem in detail. Limit
your post to just one Outlook Express newsgroup. (OE General would be good).
This thread is more than 90 days old and not even on the MSNews server any
longer.

Thank you.

If your files got corrupted then its likely nothing will be able to recover
the lost messages from them, as they no longer contain the messages. You
can check the Recycle bin for bak files that are backups of the dbx files
(see www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#2). Otherwise, my DBXpress program
(www.oehelp.com/DBXpress/) has an extract from disk feature that will bypass
the file system and analyze the entire hard drive for messages and it will
recover whatever is still on the hard drive disk clusters.

See this recent discussion about the problem:
http://groups.google.com/group/microsoft.public.outlookexpress.general/browse_frm/thread/fcd35fbfa457fd6f

For reference, here's a list of things which are known to cause this
behavior:

• Various & sundry anti-virus applications (including Norton);
• Various & sundry anti-spyware applications;
• Various & sundry third-party firewalls;
• Any/all of the above running when WinXP SP3 was installed;
• IBM Rapid Access keyboard (driver) RAKDLL.DLL;
• Nero plug-in(s);
• Windows Desktop Search is installed;
• Windows Live Mail is or had been installed;
• Disk defragmentation, need for;
• Using Visual Basic DoCmd.SendObject command to create an email;
• Using any number third-party applications (e.g., accounting software) to
send emails by via Outlook Express;
• MailWasher; and/or
• Programatically opening EML files while OE is closed (e.g., creating a
New Message via Address Book).

NB: While the newsserver you're using may carry
microsoft.public.windows.inetexplorer.ie6.outlookexpress newsgroup, it is
NOT a newsgroup carried on the MS newsserver.

I have OE 6 and it keeps asking to compact messages. How about a solution to
turn the d*** thing off?
